How to add audio to your video?

Introduction

Whether you want to create a music video, or add your favorite song to a presentation, or dramatize the importance of a certain episode in your movie - in all these cases, music allows to set the mood and make your resulting video even more expressive.

Using AVS Video Editor you can easily add a new soundtrack to your movie that will replace the original sound or just supplement it with some background music. There are a lot of possibilities to combine your video with audio using the AVS4YOU software, for example, you can:

  • import an existing audio track to your video,
  • record your own voice comments from a microphone,
  • apply different audio effects to the added audio track.

Once you import your video and audio to the Media Library, you can follow the steps of this guide to easily add music to your video.

Step 1: Add your video and audio tracks to the Timeline

Right-click your video in the Media Library and select the Add to Main Video option from the menu to add the video clip to the Main Video line of the Timeline.

Then select the necessary audio track from the Media Library, right-click it and choose the Add to Audio Mix option from the menu to add your music to the Audio Mix line of the Timeline.

You might need to adjust the audio track duration so that it corresponds to your video. Drag the right audio track boundary to the left to decrease its length or to the right to increase it.

If you want to add an audio track to a certain part of your video only, specify the audio track position by dragging it to the left or right along the Audio Mix line.

You can put several audio tracks to your video. Right-click the Audio Mix line and select the Add Line option from the menu, then add the second audio track to the new line.

Note!Note: the length of time that two audio tracks play together is determined by the amount of the overlap between them. When two audio tracks overlap, the volume of each audio clip is lowered by 50 percent during the part where they overlap.

Step 2: Apply some audio effects, if necessary

If your input video file was recorded with sound, you can fully mute the original audio track. To do that, right-click the audio track of the main video at the Timeline and select the Mute option from the menu to switch off the original audio playback.

If you want to keep the original audio, you might need to use the Volume and Balance option to determine which audio will play louder than another one, so that a conversation in your video clip can be heard over the music playing in the background. Click the Volume and Balance Volume and Balance button button at the Timeline Toolbar. The Volume and Balance window opens:

Default settings allow you to play both audio tracks at equal levels.

  • use the upper slider to set an audio level for the main video soundtrack,
  • the bottom slider is used to adjust the added audio track volume.

Drag the necessary slider to the left to decrease the volume or to the right to increase it. The audio levels you set affect your entire movie. Click the OK button to apply the changes.

You can also quickly and easily apply the Fade In and Fade Out audio effects to smooth the boundaries of the audio track or a transition between two tracks.

  • Use the Fade In effect to gradually increase the sound volume at the beginning of the audio track.
  • Use the Fade Out effect to gradually decrease the sound volume at the end of the audio track.

Right-click the audio track at the Timeline and choose the corresponding option from the menu. It's not necessary to adjust these effects properties.
